Editorial Reviews:

American Secret Pusher Fighters of World War II analyzes the state of military aircraft procurement just prior to the start of World War II. It provides insight into the difficulties encountered by America's air services in dealing with an isolationist Congress and a limited mindset in the Army, which was seemingly indifferent to the aeronautical progress being made in Europe by the British and Germans. The book then focuses on the three winners of the 1940 fighter competition - the Vultee XP-54, the Curtiss XP-55, and the Northrop XP-56. These radical designs ("Pusher" referred to having the engine in the back) used non-strategic materials and were developed in secret. At the time, the aerodynamics of these aircraft far outpaced engine development. In addition, this book details the technical difficulties of mating an advanced aircraft design with inadequate engine development.

Summary: Amazingly detailed
Comment: My copy of this book arrived just a little more than 24 hours ago. Quick reads of various sections of the book clearly revealed an incredibly detailed account of these experimental aircraft. The selection of photographs is equally impressive. Having written one book and begun another myself has allowed me to understand what was involved in researching this somewhat obscure part of aviation history. Without a doubt this book will be an interesting read from cover to cover hence the early review.

Summary: fascinating look at three fascinating airplanes
Comment: It is hard to say which is more remarkable: the three pusher airplanes that are the subject of this book or the book itself. The airplanes are terrific products of very creative people. They were the result of a government request for ideas as opposed to airplanes built to meet government specifications. With their imaginations unbound by unimaginative specifications, aeronautical engineers quickly developed and produced flying prototypes of these airplanes.

The author, Gerald H. Balzer, worked on this book for many years. His effort shows and the book is very successful. It is filled with photos of these extraordinary airplanes and describes in detail the story--from the beginning to the final disposition--of each of them.

The book is highly recommended.
