Napoleon's Polish Lancers of the Guard were unique in their appearance and in their loyalty. This book reveals their varied and colorful uniforms as well as their long and loyal service for the Bonaparte cause. The Poles were the only foreign contingent never to defect from Napoleon's cause, staying faithful to the end - a squadron even accompanied Napoleon into exile on Elba, and the Guard reformed in 1815 to charge at Waterloo. In 1808, when Napoleon was smashing his way through the Spanish armies to get at British forces in the Peninsular, the Poles astounded observers with their extreme acts of courage and military daring. In one memorable instance the Poles captured a defended mountain pass at Somosierra, overrunning four batteries of cannons in the process. It was they who introduced the use of the lance to the French army, adding a new tactical dimension to the use of the cavalry on the battlefield and demonstrated its deadly effects in all of Napoleon most famous victories - particularly Wagram in 1809. Brave and ruthless in equal measures, this is a fascinating insight into the fighting lives of the legendary Polish Lancers.

Customer Rating: Summary: OK Effort Comment: I am usually a fan of the team of Pawley and Courcelle as they jointly produce the more interesting Osprey Napoleonic titles. Generally, the text by Pawley is interesting and readable but it is really the illustrations by Courcelle which interest me. His drawings are similar to the style of Lelipvre and the Funckens.
This particular volume surprisingly contains only serviceable drawings of the Polish Lancers which does not reflect the grandeur of the uniforms worn by this elite unit. This effort pales in comparison to other superlative efforts by the same team.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another Near-Miss Comment: I had been looking forward to this volume since it was announced by Osprey last year. It is a good effort and is recommended, but there are some serious problems with it. There is a comment in the section on the Russian campaign that the Russians were 'not really beaten' at Borodino but merely 'seriously shaken by their enormous casualties' which is why they left the battlefield. While not a decisive victory in the Napoleonic sense, the Russians were thoroughly defeated at Borodino, being forced out of a strong defensive position and losing heavily in the process.
Further, the table of the organization of the Imperial Guard for the 1815 campaign in Belgium on page 44 is incorrect. There were four each Old Guard foot Grenadier and Chasseur infantry regiments with Nord, not three as shown. Additionally, the company of sailors is not shown, the Elite Gendarmes is shown as a regiment which is incorrect. The Mamelukes are not shown, and their were no miners in the Imperial Guard. Lastly, in the text the Guard cavalry is mentioned as being organized as a light and heavy cavalry brigade, when they were organized as a light and a heavy cavalry division.
The contribution of the Guard cavalry at Waterloo's ending is also understanted. They acted as the army's rear guard, fought off the attempt at pursuit of the British cavalry, and the Grenadiers a Cheval were the last to leave the field in perfect order. Unfortunately, there is no bibliography which would have been most helpful.
The illustrations are excellent and very helpful, but there are too many errors in fact in the text as noted which detract from the overall value of this volume. Again, it is adequate and recommended but it is a disappointment and not up to the usual standard of work from the author.
Customer Rating: Summary: Text thumbs up, Illustrations thumbs down Comment: This is the best yet easily accessed book in English about this famous regiment. Of course the limit of space in the Men-At-Arms books also limits the possibility of entering deeper in to the subject. Still, the author Ronald Pawly makes a very good effort in trying to cover all essential info about the regiment. An extra hats off to the author for the (almost) correct spelling of Polish names and surnames, which is no walk in the park for a non-Pole ;-)
Very sadly enough the effort of the illustrator Patrice Courcelle does not match the effort of the author. Hastily done, lacking good detail and a bit shabby, the illustrations seems to have been made under considerable time-pressure. This becomes painfully obvious when compared to Pawly's and Courcelle's previous work on the Polish lancer's sister regiment `The red Lancers' (MAA 389) where Courcelle's work is brilliant.
I'm still waiting for THE book on this regiment, the apple of the Emperor's eye, but nonetheless still consider this publication a nice effort.
