Editorial Reviews:

Now recognized as the standard work on the subject, Realm of St Stephen is a comprehensive history of medieval Eastern and Central Europe. Pál Engel traces the establishment of the medieval kingdom of Hungary from its conquest by the Magyar tribes in 895 until defeat by the Ottomans at the battle of Mohacs in 1526. He shows the development of the dominant Magyars who, upon inheriting an almost empty land, absorbed the remaining Slavic peoples into their culture after the original communities had largely disappeared. Engel's book is an accessible and highly readable history.

Summary: Good data, but very dry.
Comment: This is an excellent reference book containing a lot of well researched data about the subject. I heartily recommend it for any hard-core history buff interested in medieval Hungary. However, for the casual reader beware: Books like this are the reason people who hate history hate history. History is a series of interlocking stories about people in interesting situations and how they deal with their problems. It's like reading a fantasy series by different authors except it's better because it's real. History should be, and can be, the most fun subject on earth. Unfortunately, a lot of people hate history because they see it as a dry recitation of facts, dates, and statistics. Books like this, contribute to the negative stereotype. For example, the book goes on and on for chapters citing King Sigismund's tax revenues in Florins and the numbers of castles confiscated and given to this supporter or that baron. However, it barely touches on how he had an overbearing mother-in-law whom he hated ruining his relationship with his first wife and how this marital strife impacted the lives of his subjects. So while the books is a good reference work for the serious student of medieval Hungary, it's dryer than burnt toast in a west-Texas sandstorm approach makes it a tedious read that should be avoided by someone looking to enjoy a fascinating subject.
