According to an old Jewish legend, in every generation there is a handful of righteous persons thanks to whom the world endures. During the Holocaust, there was such a handful in Europe and around the world. Working mostly alone while putting their life at risk and defying their own society and their higher-ups, they saved many lives, and have been recognized as "Righteous Gentiles." In story after amazing story, the author, who directs the "Righteous Gentiles Program" at the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem, paints a picture of great pain and suffering, but also of great courage and nobility of good people who serve as a model of human behavior and give us hope for the future.

Customer Rating: Summary: YES, A GOOD BOOK,HOWEVER POLE IRENA SENDLER,POLISH NUNS & PRIEST COULD OF BEEN HALF THE BOOK ARE DOWNPLAYED:SHINDLER 'NO' ANGEL! Comment: I still recommend this book. However, Irena Sendler or Sendlerowa was downplayed in this book, as were Polish Nuns and Priests, who were executed daily, not just for helping the Jewish children, but for just being Polish-Catholic. All the other countries, were not brutally murdered on the spot for helping Jews, as the Poles were - this was no joke to the Germans. In practically every Polish village, entire Polish-Catholic families were hung in the centers of towns, and left for a sick German display of what happens to Poles who help Jews. Entire Polish families left hanging and rotting - it sent a very powerful message. And "STILL," Poland is number 1 at yad vashem for saving Jews. NO OTHER COUNTRY, with all their wonderful stories lived in constant fear of death and terror as the Poles did - No Other Country! Germany despised the Poles and the Jews and planned to eventually rid the world of both of them. Germans, as many have forgotten, resented the Polish Nation, for giving the wondering Jews of the world a home for nearly a thousand years,i.e., how dare the Poles do this, so close to the 'superior German nation?!' Most people who saved Jews in German-Occupied Poland will never be thanked because all or most were slaughtered on the spot or hung immediately in the town square, for a sick German display of terror and warning. Give schindler his due, but he was not and never will be an IRENA SENDLER or a JAN KARSKI or the thousands upon thousands of Polish-Catholics, Nuns and Priests that were murdered, beaten and denegrated on the spot, along with there entire families and villages and - NOT! the slap on the hand mostly - ALL THE OTHER NATIONS - received, with all due respect.
Read this book, it is worth it, but also read "The Forgotten Holocaust," (German Terror Tactics and Atrocities Against the Polish Nation) and "Did The Children Cry: German Barbaric Atrocities Against Jewish & Polish Children," both books by Professor Richard Lukas. Another objective book: "The Holocaust in History," by Jewish Historian Dr. Michael Maruss and winner of The National Jewish Award. These historians are objective and so truthful, which is why their books win legitimate awards. DVD's: see "The Pianist," by Polish-Jewish filmaker Roman Polanski. Polanski was 'there,' as was Wladislaw Szpielman, who kept an - onsight - diary for crying out loud! Botttom line: Good Poles; good Jewish and some good Germans, as well as bad in all. One more book that I read in 1 sitting; 'Night,' by Elie Weisel. Why?: Objective and truthful. Anything by Marek Jan Chodakiewicz, like Night, is wriiten to show objective truth and move people 'together,' towards healing. Avoid, anything written by Jan gross, as his writings rip all wounds open again, by deceptive false pretense. Gross has been disproven over and over again. Gross writes hate, - needlessly - sending our blood pressure thruogh the roof. Gross has only brought back a lot of unecessary hate and ironically, anti-semitism in his thoughtless and sensationalist false diatribes against decent people. Read those who are brave to tell the truth, and who have won legitimate awards, for the right reasons: a better world ahead.
People, have seemed to forgotten that the GERMANS brutally murdered 11 million innocent people, that's 11,000,000, and would have kept on murdering until they were stopped by force. The German's murdered 6,000,000 Jews; 3,000,000 Polish Catholics and Polish Protestants , as well as, 2,000,000 Gypsies, Homosexuals and the disabled. As the Germans were retreating, they took all prisoners with them - Jewish, Polish, French, etc., and had them basically run to death, to the next camp in the freezing winter; 1 out of a 100 made it. (Night)
We all talk and feel so brave with our stomachs full and our nice warm homes all safe and clean. One must ask himself: How would I have acted? Ask yourself: "Would I have risked my and my childrens lives?" Many Poles did, only to be hung in the town center for a display of terror and warning about what the Germans would do if you dared to even hand a Jewish person an apple. More Poles than in, any other nation, defied the Germans, and paid dearly for it with instant death by the Germans for entire Polish families and even entire Polish towns. Will all Jews today be judged for their indifference to the Jewish committed atrocities against Palestinian Peoples. Israelis are demolishing Palestinian Homes and Killing and imprisoning Palestinians as you read this. Where are the Jewish reighteous today? Could you be as brave or heroic as Irena Sendler or Jan Karski or the Nuns or Priests were in Poland. Poles were, again, killed instantly, whereas Jews have no threat of life, but the atrocities against the Palestinians continue. Where are all those hypocrits that are so quick to judge others!?
Focus on creating less hate in the world (Elie Wiesel), and not more (Gross). You will feel better, and so will those around you. Adios!
Customer Rating: Summary: The story of the Righteous Gentiles Comment: Saving The Jews: Amazing Tories Of Men And Women Who Defied The "Final Solution" is the story of the Righteous Gentiles who sought to rescue Jewish men, women and children from certain death at the hands of the Nazis during the horrific years of World War II. Many were to be found out and sent to concentrations camps, experienced the atrocities of the camps and losing their own lives. Here are the stories of such well known figures as Oskar Schindler and Raoul Wallenberg, and fifty other individuals throughout Europe who risked everything to save the lives of thousands of Jews targeted for extinction simply for being Jewish. Highly recommended reading, Saving The Jews is a welcome and invaluable contribution to the growing library of Holocaust Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections.
Customer Rating: Summary: For anyone seeking true stories of selfless courage Comment: Saving The Jews: Amazing Stories Of Men And Women Who Defied The "Final Solution" is a magnificent compendium of stories of how almost 18,000 non-Jewish men and women from some 40 different countries risked their lives during World War II to save Jews from dying in the Nazi holocaust. While a few are well known (Schindler, Wallenberg, the Dutch friends and neighbors of Anne Frank and her family), most were of these "Righteous Gentiles" were known only to friends and family -- and the people whose lives they rescued. Saving The Jews is a remarkable, seminal work that is an enthusiastically recommended acquisition for holocaust studies, Judaic history collections, and the reading list of anyone seeking true stories of selfless courage in the face of overwhelming evil.
