Summary: Fascinating, if a bit defensive.
Comment: This interesting work is a military history of the Hungarian people. Beginning in ninth century with the Magyar arrival in Eastern Europe, Professor Komjathy traces Hungarian wars and war-making, focusing heavily on such highpoints as the Mongol Invasion of 1241, Janos Hunyadi's activities in the fifteenth century, and the Hungarian bids for independence in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book then ends with an in-depth examination of Hungary's involvement in World War II.

Overall I found this to be a fascinating book. It is written with a passion and clarity that draws the reader in. I do, though, have two things against this book. First, for some inexplicable reason, the Napoleonic wars are complete ignored in this work, something that I find hard to understand. Secondly, this book in not unbiased, but is intended to provide heroes for "second and third generation ethnic Hungarians who live in the free world." As such, the author's spirited defenses of Hungarian military defeats sometimes come off sounding rather defensive and touchy.

Overall, though, in spite of the criticism above, I did enjoy this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in Hungarian or military history. Indeed, I truly enjoyed reading a history book that covered historical events from a vantage point that I have not seen used in any other book. I do wish that Professor Komjathy would update this fascinating book, as so much has happened in Hungary since 1982!
