By July 1943, the tides of war had turned on the Germans. Tunisia fell in May leaving no Axis territory in North Africa. On July 5th they had launched their last great offensive on the Russian Front at Kursk and were nearing their farthest point of advance when the Allies struck at the 'soft underbelly' of Europe by invading Sicily. The invading American and British forces took 38 days to capture the island due to the skillful defense and fighting withdrawal in some of the most difficult terrain in the war prompting author Carlo D'Este to call this battle a 'Bitter Victory'. 26 historically based scenarios are included, with several "what-if" scenarios. There are several grand historical scenarios with the complete campaign lasting 351 turns.

Summary: A Top Notch Campaign
Comment: This is a great game like all HPS games. In terms of detailed, historically accurate wargames, HPS stands at the head of the class. The Order of Battles are always precise and accurate. The maps are wonderful. The scenarios plentiful. I unhesitatingly recommend any HPS game. That said, these games are designed for hardcore grognards (dedicated wargamers). People who are interested in the topic but have little wargaming experience should probably look elsewhere before attempting an HPS game.
In terms of Sicily 1943: This is a fantastic title. Panzer Campaigns excels in putting gamers in command of complex and challenging military situations. The invasion of Sicily provides ample challenges for both sides. The scope of the game is a bit different from other titles in the Panzer Campaign series. Instead of breaking through a line or capturing given objectives, the overall mission is for the Allies to completely eliminate the Axis from Sicily. This alone make the game unique and exciting. Both sides are eminently playable and appear to have a reasonable chance of victory, yet both sides face difficult challenges to overcome. The main problem facing the Allies is trying to force a major breakthrough over difficult terrain and against an opponent who has some excellent individual units. The Axis has to successfully plug gaps over a wide front against a seemingly unstoppable horde of Allied forces. As an added bonus that ensures boundless replayability, this was the HPS title that introduced the Strategic Decisions function. Allied players have the option of attacking the island at different locations while Axis players have the option of centralizing or spreading out the defense. But even without this, at ~350 turns the full Sicily 1943 campaign will take players a long time to complete.

Summary: Kursk '43- Addictive as crack
Comment: If you're into games which present a mental challenge as opposed to simple click-fests or first-person-shooters, and have an interest in the battle of Kursk this game is a must have.
Units are battalions for infantry, although German battalions can breakdown into companies, regiments and battalions for tanks where again the Germans can break down into companies.
There are many smaller scenarios with only a handful of units take as few as 8 turns to play or one can play any of the huge campaign games-one where you can fight the entire battle of Kursk in 121 turns with over a thousand units to each side.
If you enjoyed playing any of the board wargames from SPI, Avalon Hill, etc., chances are you will love this game as much as I do.
