Summary: Simply, in the same level of Gilels' record.
Comment: The recording made by Gilels with Jochum of the Brahms concerts, was always considered the classic record of these works.
Here we have the same level, with Nelson Freire.

Summary: Strong, good detail
Comment: I'm a "dumb" music lover. I listen a lot, don't know why I like stuff, but this is my 3rd set of these concertos and it is the best. I am very happy I bought it.

Summary: BOLD WORTHWHILE VERSIONS OF THESE MASTERPIECES
Comment: These versions of the 2 Brahms concertos are truly exciting. The orchestral playing is muscular and dynamic to a degree I have never heard before. The only reservation I have about this first-rate set comes in Brahms Concerto #2. The 2nd movt of #2 is played too fast and loses the gravitas that can come from this amazing movement. Also, the cello soloist in movt 3 plays like a high school amateur...this sublime movt is marred by the crude, bumpy playing of the solo cello...too bad.
Overall, you will not go wrong with this set.

Summary: Amazing orchestral textures
Comment: The Brahms piano concertos are my favorite pieces of music and therefore I
have several renditions of these beautiful works. What was said above about the orchestra on these discs is quite true. It is beautiful,
powerful and clear. However, in my opinion in all the fast movements
the piano feels rushed, as though Freire is pushing ahead of the
orchestra. For me, this sometimes detracts from the lyricism of the lines. Even though this offering is quite good I prefer the
Emanuel Ax performances of these concertos.
One fact to correct from a previous review is these are
not live recordings. Both concertos were recorded in studio.

Comment: It should be of notice that this CD - The piano concertos of Brahms - with Nelson Freire and Chailly - won the top award for 2007 from Gramophone, as the best CD of the year.
